LL Responds to Chat Bug (Finally)

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

I posted this to the Linden blog response to the chat bug, though it hasn’t appeared there yet:

First I would like to say thank you to LL for responding at last to this highly critical issue. While the carefully phrased corporate wording of the issue is unfortunate, I also understand the business-mindedness behind it and hope that, behind the shining, positive facad of the PR team, the devs themselves understand the severity of the issue and are working their best to resolve it.

I encourage the big wigs at LL to allow the devs to spend the needed amount of time and focus on this most crucial issue. Suspending further updates and additions until this issue is resolved would be the wisest course of action, in my opinion. It is mind boggling that residents need to cry out so heartily for such a feature to be fixed, when one of the core aspects of SL is and always has been communication. How is it that this feature, which I consider to be a clear cornerstone to the purpose of SL, is not given the highest priority? What purpose is there in logging on to a social virtual grid if communication within that grid is impossible? What benefit is there in a virtual landscape if restrictions of place and distance suddenly apply there just as in RL?

I am far less interested in spending time in world so long as this problem persists, and am considering canceling my premium membership until it is resolved. Due to the extreme experience-breaking nature of this bug, I am certain this feeling will snowball the longer the issue persists. Again, I encourage that this bug be placed in priority right up with grid crashes. Residents will not be excited to see new features such as shadows, flexi-sculpts, or whatever other improvements are planned until this bug is fixed, and releasing them now will only foster resentment in a large percentage of the community. This defeats the purpose of releasing improvements, does it not?

Thank you again for responding to the community regarding this very serious matter, and for welcoming and reading our comments. I look forward to further updates on the matter and to seeing it resolved quickly.

Tiny Power!

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Unfortunately, do to RL I couldn’t make the Linden office hours today to protest about the chat bug (grrr!), but I heard it went well and that the Tinies of the Shire really made the point. Apparently LL has assigned a team to work on the bug. Go Tinies!!

Group chat failures are a complex problem. There are many possible
ways chat can fail. Here’s how you can help fix the problem.

As a first step, please collect a list of all error messages you see
when using group chat. Copy the errors exactly as you see them, and
put them on a page located below:
https://wiki.secondlife.com/w/index.php?title=Group_Chat_Failure_Messages

* Create the page if you’re the first one with information.
* Don’t worry about adding lots of details. This should be a short
list without repeats or lots of extra notes.
* Give everyone a few days to add their errors, since different resis
often experience different problems.

Once we’re sure we have a list, we can create a survey to collect more
information. We’ll ask about the computers, internet connections, time
of day, and other factors common to these errors. If we’re lucky, we
can help the dev teams better understand what’s failing.

Chat – One More Note

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

I posted this to the JIRA report:

We have over 1000 votes on the issue now. The Lindens must realize that this is an important issue by now, though I am disappointed by their lack of response. I encourage everyone to keep the votes coming, but to stay civil with them even while storming their offices. It is obviously a large issue or it would have been dealt with when it first appeared years ago. As it is, it has reached the boiling point and can not be ignored any longer; just remember, honey attracts more butterflies than vinegar.

To the Lindens, let me just say that any note to the community, any public acknowledgment of the severity of the issue combined with a pledge to resolve it, would do much to calm the increasingly restless natives. I, for one, am nearly as upset about the silence of the Lindens as I am about the enforced silencing of our groups. If you are reading this but your hands are tied, please at least tell your PR people to draft a response to the community.

Chat Errors – Protest Signs

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Right now, Second Life is having a HUGE problem with group chat and it affects the largest groups the worst. We need your help to encourage LL to fix this problem. Please vote on the JIRA (problem report)

Sick of hearing about it? Let’s make the Lindens sick of it too. The signs below are available at my shop in world (or you can IM me), and play the PING-THUNK of the error messages at random time intervals when worn or rezzed (quiet versions also included – please don’t get in trouble for sound spamming, eeps!). Bug Triage office hours are the perfect time to show the Lindens that we mean business. Grab your favorite protest sign, flaming logs, and pitchfolks, and let’s storm the place.

JIRAs

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Just added a new one to my list of important JIRAs to vote on (see blog sidebar). Parts of the Ralgan cluster were vanishing for some people and not for others this evening. Please have a look at the Vanishing Region/Sim JIRA and add your vote. Again, here is how to use JIRA. Oh yes, and don’t forget to have your alts vote too. :)

I’m getting seriously irked at all the worsening issues in SL. The chat bug and lack of Linden response, I must say, is just about convincing me that SL is, for lack of a better word, screwed in the long run. I plan to spend more time in other virtual grids in hopes of getting away from LL. Time for Tinies to make an appearance on OpenLife, perhaps?
